Civ 4 and Civ Revolution

Civ 4 and Civ Revolution

How much Civilization can one person play? Well, let me tell you – a lot! I dug out my copy recently (well, Civ 4 Beyond the Sword actually) and have been playing it ever since. I also recently picked up Civilization Revolution for the PS3 and have also been playing that. I’m also planning on picking up Civilization: Colonization at some point too!

Part of the addiction is that it’s a pretty tough game and going up to harder levels is noticably harder than the previous one. I kept trying to play at Noble level, but I just didn’t seem to be able to make the leap and got my arse kicked every time I tried. Now that I am beginning to understand the game better, however, I’ve found myself winning on Noble level and, even when it’s going badly, I am still competing well.

Civ Rev is different to what I was expecting, however. It’s less involved than the PC game and more WoW (World of Warcraft) in its visual appeal. Whilst playing it, it did strike me just how much of an impact WoW has had on the current CRPG market, especially in the way fantasy games look and feel.

Generally speaking it’s enjoyable enough, but it doesn’t have the same depth or scope of the PC game. The researching of technologies and the building of world wonders just doesn’t seem to be as worthwhile or as big a deal. It’s also a much smaller map, with one size fits all. But, to be fair I haven’t played it a huge amount so maybe there’s a level I haven’t discovered yet – and kids will certainly prefer it!

I’ve also been playing the Road to War module (I updated the default version to the Ultimate Edition) and it’s a lot of fun, though probably verging on being too big for me. A lot of fun though :)

Of course, the one draw back to all this playing of Civ is that I really should be doing something else! But what the hell…
