The Future of DDM

The Future of DDM

There is currently a lot of speculation online about the state of D&D Miniatures – and more specifically, whether or not WotC are planning on making changes or even dropping it altogether. I might be wrong, but I think speculation started with the removal of some future sets from amazon, which was quickly picked up by some fans. Of course, this was dismissed by some as the sky is falling syndrome, but the silence emanating from WotC on their own boards soon set even these tongues wagging.

The general speculation is the PH Heroes sets have not been well received (which I suppose must translate to not having sold well) and that they’ll either been blended back in with the monster sets or even dropped altogether. This has in turn led to speculation that the monster sets will also be revamped.

Of course, all of this is speculation, but the fact that no one from WotC has denied the rumours does lend some credence to it. Additionally, the lack of spoilers anywhere on the next set Streets of Shadow has fuelled the rumours.

The line has been in trouble for some time now and the various changes that have occurred to rectify this – ddm2, monster sets and ph heroes sets, etc – don’t seem to be doing the job at the moment. I used to complete sets, but stopped doing that a few sets back and now I only get the ones I need – and I know there are a lot of others just like me.

Nonetheless, even though my interest has waned and the figures are not what they once were, I think it would be a real shame if the range was to die altogether. While I have just about all the minis I’m ever going to need, there always seem to be a few decent ones I still need in each set. And while I enjoy painting, I rarely seem to get the chance to actually do any and having prepainted minis works well for a quick fix.

It’ll be interesting to see what 2010 holds for the D&D Miniatures range.
